You’re either here because you love grapefruit, or you love salt. Either way, this is the drink for you. The Salty Dog is one of the most famous variations of the Greyhound cocktail. And it’s just as easy to make too.

The Salty Dog is a twist on the Greyhound, which is made with gin and grapefruit juice. Harry Craddock is thought to have invented the Greyhound, which was first featured in his book ‘The Savoy Cocktail Book’ in the 1930s. A pinch of salt was added somewhere in the 1950s, and the Salty Dog was born. Our Greyhound cocktail recipe has a few paragraphs dedicated to the history of the Greyhound cocktail, which might be of interest.

What Glass is a Salty Dog Served In?

This cocktail is most commonly served in a rocks glass or a highball glass as it is a rimmed cocktail that requires enough room to accommodate ice.

Variations on the Salty Dog Cocktail

The Salty Dog is a variation of the Greyhound. The dalmatian is also a popular variation on the Greyhound. The Dalmatian is a spicy spin on the classic Vodka Greyhound cocktail. The Dalmation recipe adds a kick to the acidic grapefruit classic by using black pepper syrup, with the heat of the pepper syrup producing a powerful, lingering aftertaste against the backdrop of the citrusy flavor.

What Are the Best Spirits for A Salty Dog?

With only two components, there’s no room for sloppy vodka or gin. This is especially true since there are no sugars added to mask away the flavor. Therefore we recommend using high-quality vodka or gin like Grey Goose or Hendricks. The same is true for the juice. Fresh juice always beats canned. As far as salt, I recommend a kosher salt or something that’s a little more coarse. Table salt is not fitting for cocktails.
