What is the History of The Democrat cocktail?

The Democrat cocktail was created in 2007 by the popular bartender and mixologist Jon Santer while working at “Bourbon and Branch” in San Francisco. He created the Democrat after reading David McCullough’s Truman, a biography about the life of 33rd President Harry S. Truman.

Santer was inspired by Truman’s accounts of his life but particularly touched by the notion of Truman enjoying a glass of bourbon with his wife on their porch in Missouri.

“I started to think about great porch drinks, like sweet tea and lemonade, things one could sip while enjoying the Missouri evening. The Democrat is that drink, a boozy lemonade”

Jon Santer, owner of the Prizefighter bar (Emeryville, California) and Nommo bar (San Francisco).

What are the best spirits and Ingredients for The Democrat?

We recommend Jim Bean Kentucky Straight Bourbon for this cocktail. The American white oak-aged bourbon adds a smooth, sweet caramel palate that mixes well with the cooling mint and revitalizing peach liqueur.

If you have a really strong sweet tooth, then bump up the honey flavor with a whiskey that uses a honey variation. There’s the Jim Beam Honey, Jack Daniels Honey, or any other sort of whiskey that adds a little more sweet to that already thirst-quenching cocktail.
